LOUDONVILLE, NY - The Iona College moved to 3-1 in conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Siena Saturday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic conference action held at Siena Field. Iona took the opener 5-0 before securing an 11-0 win in five innings in the finale.
Senior Beth Kann and sophomore Carly Argyle led the Gaels in the circle, combining to shutout the Saints offense for 12 innings, allowing just six hits and two walks over the two contests. At the plate, Kann finished with four hits and five runs batted in.
In game one, the Gaels would put across two runs in the first inning. Kann drove in senior Jodi Petersen with a single up the middle before sophomore Brianna Schauer scored on a wild pitch.
The Gaels would tack on three more runs in the sixth inning. Petersen would single home senior Laura Jackson, making her Iona debut, before Kann would drive in Schauer and Petersen with another run scoring single.
As great as her numbers at the plate, Kann lifted the Gaels with her performance in the circle, allowing three hits and three walks over six innings. Kann would hold the Saints hitless until the fifth inning to earn her first win of the season. After Siena put two on in the bottom of the seventh, Argyle would come in and record the final three outs. Jessika-Jo Sandrini struck out eight for Siena, but was saddled with the loss after allowing ten hits and five runs.
In game two, the Gaels would put the game away early with six runs in the top of the first. Kann would drive in Petersen with a single up the middle. Sophomore Allison Hand would deliver a run scoring singleof her own before freshman Sydney Dimon drove in Kann with a single. Freshman Brianna King would deliver an RBI single prompting a Siena pitching change. Argyle, the game two starter, would plate two with a double scoring Dimon and Hand.
In the top of the second, Hand would connect on her third home run of the season before Schauer and Kann picked up run scoring singles in the third inning.
Iona would take an 11-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman Sarah Schutz would plate Jackson on a fielder's choice before junior Katie Jansson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Iona would then finish the contest by retiring the Saints in the bottom of the inning.
Argyle picked up her fifth win of the season, allowing three hits and one walk in five innings of work with two strikeouts. Alyssa Lancaster got the loss for Siena, allowing six runs, five earned in a third of an inning.
Iona is back in action Sunday, when they host Manhattan in a MAAC doubleheader, beginning at 12:00 pm.
