NIAGARA UNIV., NY - The Iona College baseball team dropped a pair of contests to Niagara Saturday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Bobo Field. Iona was outscored 7-2 in the opener and 4-3 in the nightcap.

In game one, Niagara would push across three runs in the first before adding a fourth in the second inning.

Iona would crack the scoreboard in the top of the third inning when sophomore Jimmy Guiliano drew a bases loaded walk.

The Gaels would be able to trim the Niagara lead in half, 4-2, in the fifth inning when junior Joe Smith scored Guiliano with a single up the middle.

Niagara would answer with two runs in the bottomg of the frame to put the game out of reach before scoring another run in the eighth.

Junior Eddie Macaluso would take the loss for Iona, allowing six runs, five earned, over five innings of work with four strikeouts. Kyle Olver got the win for Niagara, surrendering two runs, both unearned, over nine innings while striking out eight.

In the day's finale, Iona was able to get out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.

Sophomore Matt Hratko singled to center field with two outs to drive in senior Matt Kriss before freshman Christian Choman followed with a single to left to score Guiliano.

Niagara would answer with a run in the bottom of the inning before tying the game with a run in the third.

The Purple Eagles would jump ahead, scoring the game winning runs in the fifth inning.

Freshman Matt Byrne would deliver a bases loaded single with two outs in the sixth inning to score Smith, and put Iona behind by just one, but it was as close as the Gaels would get.

Freshman Max Bruckner was saddled with the loss in the contest, allowing four runs in four innings. Jordan Schwartz got the win for Niagara, surrendering three runs in 5.1 innings.

Iona wraps up its series with the Purple Eagles
