Box Score LAWRENCEVILLE,NJ - The Iona College baseball team fell to Rider 9-2 in the series finale in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Pittaro Field.
After leading 1-0 following their first at bat, the Gaels surrendered the game's next eight runs over the next five innings. Senior IF Matthew Kriss drove in junior CF Joe Torres in the first frame with an RBI ground out.
Torres scored Iona's other run in the sixth inning as he manufactured his own tally. After a leadoff walk, he stole second base, his team leading 25th of the season. After advancing to third on a rookie 2B Matt Byrne fly out, he scored on a wild pitch with Kriss at the plate.
Torres and Byrne accounted for the Gaels two hits in the contest. Sophomore RHP Steve Basile took the loss, tossing six innings. Senior RHP Matt Marley pitched two innings of scoreless relief.
Rider C Eric Strano was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Pitcher Kurt Sowa earned the win with eight strikeouts in seven innings.
The Gaels complete their season later this week when they host Saint Peter's at City Park. The Gaels and Saints play a doubleheader on Thursday and a single-game on Senior Day Friday. Both start times are slated for noon.
