WSOC Blanks Canisius At Home On Youth Day, 1-0

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team (2-5-2, 1-0-0 MAAC) opened Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with a 1-0 win over Canisius (2-7-1, 0-1-0 MAAC) on Youth Day at Mazzella Field. Junior Safi Ayinde's goal in the 63rd minute was the lone tally of the contest and proved to be the game winner.

After playing 63 minutes of scoreless soccer, Ayinde broke past a defender inside 18-yards and had a one-on-one opportunity vs. Golden Griffin netminder Megan Tock. Ayinde deked right and beat Tock on a low shot to the left corner of the net at the 62:34 mark.

Iona's defense kept a rather formidable Canisius scoring attack off the scoreboard. The Golden Griffins held a slight 10-9 shots advantage and were 5-3 on corner kicks.

Senior keeper Trista Rivera made seven saves to earn the shut out. Tock stopped four Iona shots between the pipes.

The Maroon & Gold continues MAAC action Wednesday (Sep. 25) on the road when they face Manhattan at Gaelic park.
