Women's Soccer Blanks Manhattan, 1-0

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team picked up its first win in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with 1-0 victory over Manhattan College Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field. The win pushes Iona's record to 5-6-1 overall on the year, and 1-1-1 in league action.

"We dominated the majority of play and and didn't allowed Manhattan many opportunities," said head coach Linda Hathorn. "We were not able to capatilize on the chances we created but found a way to get one across."

The Gaels secured the lone tally of the contest in the 45th minute of the first half. Following a corner kick by sophomore defender Emily Hansen, sophomore forward Erika Flowers pushed across a sliding shot from inside the box into the net with one second remaining in the period. Iona tallied 14 shots in the first half, compared to the Jaspers' three attempts.

"It wasn't our best opportunity to score, said Hathorn. "But that how the game works out sometimes."

In the second half, Iona outshot Manhattan 8-6, but could not stretch the lead. Freshman forward Charlotte Stuart registered three shots on goal in the period that were stopped by Jaspers goalkeeper Kristen Skonieczny.  Manhattan's best chance to even the score came in the 80th minute when Colleen Kavanagh put a shot on net, forcing Iona netminder Morgan McBrier to make a sprawling stop.

McBrier finished the contest with five saves for her career solo shutout, while Skonieczny made seven stops.

"We need to continue to fight to the end and keep pushing the pedal forward," said Hathorn. "That's what conference play is all about."

The Gaels continue league play Saturday (Oct. 4), when they host Rider for a 1:00 pm start.
