Nunez Nets Game Winner In 4-3 Men's Soccer Win

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team saw a three-goal lead erased by an undermanned Saint Peter's squad before freshman Marcos Nunez scored the game winning goal for the Gaels in a 4-3 victory over the Peacocks.

Iona scored the first three goals of the contest, before three straight second half goals by the Peacocks evened the score. Nunez found the net in the 87th minute to move the Gaels to 4-1-0 in league play.

In the 17th minute, Iona took a 1-0 lead on Nunez's first career tally. After a Saint Peter's foul, senior midfielder Michael Holzer found freshman defender Tyler Pinho heading down the right side. Pinho then fed the ball to the middle of the field, where Nunez one-timed it with his heel into the net to give Iona a 1-0 advantage.

In the 23rd minute, a red card in the box allowed Iona a penalty kick. Senior midfielder Ignacio Maganto converted the opportunity for his seventh goal of the season.

Just under two minutes later, Maganto found the net for the second time off assists from Pinho and Nunez. Nunez found Maganto at the top of the box where the midfielder connected on a shot to the left side for his 24th career goal.

At the start of the second half, the Peacocks scored their first goal in the 50th minute. After a free kick by Marcel Madde was stopped by Iona goalkeeper Jacobo Aparicio, Michael Crentsil put a rebound in for his first goal of the season.

Luke Fairlamb scored Saint Peter's second goal in the 52nd minute off a feed from Crentsil before connecting on a free kick in the 83rd minute to tie the game.

Just over four minutes later, Nunez took a feed from classmate Luis Mendoza and beat the keeper through his legs for the game-winner.

Aparicio earned the win after entering the second half in relief of sophomore Julian Petrello.  Aparicio and Petrello each made one save apiece in the contest.  Saint Peter's goalkeeper David Giddings made seven stops.

The Gaels are back in action Saturday afternoon (Oct. 20) at 2:00 pm.
