LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - The Iona College men's soccer team moved to 2-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with a 1-0 victory over Rider University Saturday afternoon at Ben Cohen Field. The Gaels are unbeaten in their last five contests, with a record of 4-0-1 over the stretch.
"It was a great collective effort from the team," said head coach Fernando Barboto. "We battled, found a way to score a great goal and got the shutout on the road."
Senior midfielder Ignacio Maganto tallied the game's only goal in the 56th minute; his second game-winner of the season. Taking a feed from senior midfielder Michael Holzer, Maganto connected from the top of the 18 for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The Gaels outshot the Broncs 18-16 in the contest, with each team registering four corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Julian Petrello made nine saves for Iona in net, one shy of a career high. David Pastuna made 10 stops for the Broncs.
"We have made adjustments over the last five contests," said Barboto. "But the main thing has been our collective play with the ball and without!"
The Maroon & Gold resumes league play Wednesday at Marist (7:00 pm).
