Box Score 2 DOVER, DE - The Iona College baseball team dropped a pair of games to Bucknell and Delaware State in non-conference action at Wesley College Field. The Gaels fell to the Bison 9-5 in the opener and to the Hornets 8-7 in the night cap.
All 14 runs scored in the opener came in three innings in Iona's loss to Bucknell. The Bison held a 5-4 lead after two innings and scored four runs in the eighth inning to overcome the Maroon & Gold.
Senior CF Joe Torres and sophomore 2B Matt Byrne collected two hits apiece for the Gaels going 2-for-5. Torres scored a run and drove in two others and had a stolen base. Byrne tripled in the second to drive in a run and scored in the opening inning after an infield single. Sophomore 1B Christian Choman and rookie PH Nick Hogan recorded Iona's other RBI.
Sophomore LHP John Nargoski took the loss allowing five runs in 1.1 innings. Senior RHP Kenny Dietrich allowed four runs to cross in 6.1 innings of relief but only one was earned. Sophomore RHP Jake Kurz faced one batter and recorded an out while sophomore RHP Alex Fishberg tossed a scoreless ninth inning.
A three run eighth inning for Delaware State proved to be the difference in the night cap.
Rookie RHP Bill Maier allowed five runs on five hits in seven innings of work but only two were earned. Sophomore LHP Andrew Pucillo took the loss. Sophomore RHP John Daddino recorded the final out via strikeout in the eighth.
Choman and junior LF Jimmy Guiliano each collected two hits. Choman drove in two runs and single RBIs were earned by sophomore DH Zach Brown, sophomore PH Travis Mistretta and senior RF Joe Smith. Torres, rookie 2B Tyler Bruno and sophomore SS Vinny DeMaria each scored twice.
The Gaels are back in action next weekend at Hofstra.
