Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Fairfield scored six runs in its final three at bats to pull away from the Iona College baseball team 9-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at City Park. The Stags (6-10, 2-1 MAAC) took the rubber match of the three-game series with the Gaels (2-11, 1-2 MAAC).
Senior RF Joe Smith drove in the Gaels lone run with a double to left center with two-out in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore 1B Christian Choman had two hits in the contest including a first inning double.
Fairfield 3B Jake Salpietro drove in four runs with a two-run single in the third and a two-run double in the ninth. He was 3-for-6 in the game.
Rookie RHP Bill Maier took the loss. He allowed three earned runs on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Fairfield RHP Mike Wallace tossed eight innings with seven strikeouts in the win.
The Gaels are back in action next week with four non-conference games. Iona travels to Lehigh Wednesday (Mar. 26) and hosts Seton Hall Friday (Mar. 28) before traveling to Central Connecticut for a Sunday (Mar. 30) doubleheader.
