Box Score BROOKHAVEN, NY - The Iona College baseball team dropped a 2-1 decision to Central Connecticut in extra innings at Dowling College's Golden Lions Field. A two-out RBI single for the Blue Devils in the top of the 11th was the difference in the game.
After a near two-week layoff due to poor field conditions in the Northeast, Iona and Central Connecticut found a neutral field on Eastern Long Island to do battle.
The Gaels struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning as rookie C Chris Russo picked up an RBI single with two-out driving in junior LF Jimmy Guiliano.
Central Connecticut knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning and the score remained that way until the final frame.
Junior CF Joe Torres had his third multi-hit effort in four games, going 2-for-5 with a double and a stolen base. Russo, senior LF Joe Smith, sophomore 1B Christain Choman, rookie RF Nick Hogan, senior 3B Chris Sand and sophomore SS Vinny DeMaria each had a hit in the contest. Smith also posted a double.
Sophomore RHP Mariano Rivera tossed the first four inning for the Gaels allowing three base runners and striking out two batters in the no decision. Sophomore RHP Max Bruckner threw the fifth and sixth innings, allowing a hit, an unearned run and striking out three batters. Senior RHP Kenny Dietrich pitched three perfect innings in the seventh, eighth and ninth, with two strikeouts. Sophomore RHP Jake Kurz allowed a walk in the 10th. Sohomore LHP Andrew Pucillo allowed the go ahead run on base in the 11th and took the loss in relief. Sophomore RHP John Daddino completed the final inning allowing a hit while striking out a batter.
Central Connecticut's C Connor Fitzsimons had the game winning hit. First baseman Dominic Severino was 2-for-4 while CF J.P. Sportman scored both runs.
