Iona WWP Takes 1-2 Mark At Harvard Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, MA - The Iona College women's water polo team posted a 1-2 record over a trio of contests at the Harvard Invitational. On Saturday, the Maroon & Gold opened the three game slate with an 8-5 win over Brown. Later in the day, the Gaels fell to No. 8 Princeton by a slim 9-7 margin. On Sunday, Iona fell to No. 16 San Diego State 15-9.

The win against Brown for the 500th overall victory for Iona head coach Brian Kelly, the winningest coach in Gaels history.  Kelly has secured 206 victories for the men's team, while winning 294 games as coach of the women's program.

Against the Bears, junior Katie Stelnicki led the Gaels with two goals, three ejections drawn and one steal. Senior Eria Lauraitis scored twice and drew one ejection. Senior Amy Olsen tallied one goal and drew two ejections while sophomore Taylor Silva had one goal and two steals. Freshman Rebecca Koshy scored once and senior Hannah Cross grabbed two steals. Senior goalkeeper Marisa Gaynor made six saves and picked up two steals in net for the Maroon & Gold.

Against the Tigers, Olsen led the Gaels with three goals and one steal. Silva was credited with three assists while Koshy registered one goal and one assist. Lauratis scored once while sophomores Dana Andrea and Rebecca Mathews each found the net once. Gaynor made five saves and grabbed four steals in the contest.

Against the Aztecs on Sunday, Lauraitis led the Gaels with four goals. Silva and senior Sarah Hanly each tallied two goals apiece while Koshy scored once.

The Gaels are next on the road for a four game slate on the west coast at the Lancer Invitational beginning Fri. Mar. 14.
