Box Score LOUDONVILLE, NY - Siena topped the Iona College baseball team 5-4 in the three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series finale at Siena Field. The Saints used a four-run third inning to top the Gaels at home.
The Maroon & Gold out hit Siena 12-10 but fell a run short on the scoreboard. Iona scored first in the top of the second inning taking advantage of back-to-back doubles by rookie RF Kyle DiVico and rookie C Chris Russo. The Saints answered in the bottom of the frame with a two-out RBI base hit by 1B Vincent Citro.
A one out double by LF Andres Ortiz began the decisive third inning rally for Siena. Two more hits followed leading to the first run and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. Catcher Dave Hoffman earned an RBI on a fielder's choice and SS Tyler Martis followed with a two-run double just inside the left field line as the Saints led 5-1.
Iona got a run back in the fifth inning. Freshman 2B Tyler Bruno went first to third on a single to left field by senior DH Joe Torres. He scored when Ortiz' through sailed into the Gaels' dugout.
The Maroon & Gold added two more in the seventh. Bruno drew a one out walk and stole second base. Two batters later Torres singled to centerfield to earn an RBI. After sophomore SS Vinny DeMaria walked, Torres stole third base to put runners on the corners. Junior Jimmy Guiliano picked up an RBI with a base hit up the middle. Sophomore 1B Christian Choman looked to extend the rally with a single through the left side of the infield. DeMaria was cut down by a strong through by Ortiz to end the frame.
Guiliano was 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Gaels offensively. Torres, DeMaria and DiVico each had two hits in the loss. Rookie RHP Bill Maier took the loss allowing all five runs in 2.2 innings of work. The Gaels got strong efforts in relief as sophomores LHP Andrew Pucillo (4.1 innings) and RHP Max Bruckner (1.0 innings) combined for 5.1 innings of shutout baseball.
Siena RHP Bryan Goossens earned the win allowing two runs on eight hits in five innings of work. RHP Matt Quintana picked up his first save of the season recording the final four outs of the game.
Iona completes a five game road swing with two non-conference mid-week contests at Fairleigh Dickinson Wednesday (Apr. 23) and New York Tech Thursday (Apr. 24) and returns home nexts weekend for a three-game MAAC series vs. Niagara.
