FAIRFIELD, CT - The Iona College softball team dropped both games of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader to Fairfield University Saturday afternoon at Alumni Softball Field.
The Gaels outhit the Stags 11-6 over the two games, but allowed eight base runners via walks in the doubleheader. Sophomores Sarah Schutz and Sydney Dimon each had two hits over the two games to lead the Maroon & Gold.
In game one, Fairfield got both of its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. After a leadoff walk to Gianna Kinhofer, Lauren Listeth delivered a 2-1 pitch over the right field fence to plate the game's only runs.
The Maroon & Gold had several opportunities in the opener, including each of the first two innings. After a walk to freshman Kelsey Long and double by graduate outfielder Eileen McCann, Fairfield starter Rae Ball retired the next two batters to strand the pair in scoring position. The Gaels put two runners on in the second frame but Ball picked up a strikeout and pop up to keep Iona off the scoreboard.
Ball pitched all seven inning in the first game, scattering seven hits to earn her 11th win of the season. Junior Carly Argyle took the loss for Iona, allowing three hits, two runs and five walks in the six innings while striking out four.
In game two, the Stags scored the game's only run in the first inning when Lauren Filicia delivered a bases loaded sacrifice fly. Following the first inning, sophomore Jordan Courage and Fairfield's Rebecca Trott traded zeros. Courage took the loss, allowing three hits and three walks in six innings. Trott earned the win by allowing four hits and striking out nine.
Iona continues MAAC play Wednesday, when they travel to Manhattan for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
