Box Score TEANECK, NJ - The Iona College baseball team fell 4-3 to Fairleigh Dickinson in non-conference action at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex Wednesday afternoon. It was the Gaels' fourth one-run defeat in the past six contests.
Iona put its first run on the board in the second inning. A leadoff walk to freshman C Alex Beckett was followed by a sacrifice bunt by senior 2B Bobby Vitulano. Freshman DH Nick Hogan brought in Beckett with a single up the middle to give the Gaels an early 1-0 advantage.
Fairleigh Dickinson did its damage in the middle three innings, scoring all four runs off sophomore RHPs Jake Kurz and Max Bruckner.
The Gaels scored twice with two outs in the seventh. Senior 3B Chris Sand started the rally, battling back from 0-2 count to draw a walk. Beckett doubled to left center as Sand circled the bases. Vitulano then singled through the right side to drive in Beckett and cut the deficit to 4-3.
Beckett led the Maroon & Gold offensively, going 2-for-2 in the contest, with a walk and an RBI. Hogan, Choman, Vitulano, and junior LF Jimmy Guiliano each tallied a hit.
Kurz took the loss, tossing 4.2 innings, allowing six hits and three runs, while walking two and striking out a pair. Bruckner in relief pitched 1.1 innings, allowing a run, a hit and a walk. Sophomore RHP Mariano Rivera and senior RHP Kenny Dietrich pitched shutout frames in the seventh and eighth innings.
Fairleigh Dickinson's Brendan Butler earned the win, going 6.2 innings, while allowing three runs on five hits, and striking out four. Eric Snyder closed it out with 1.1 innings to pick up his fourth save of the season.
The Gaels end their five-game road trip against New York Tech in Old Westbury on Thursday.
