NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Junior Carly Argyle tossed a complete game, one-hit shutout, as the Iona College softball team defeated Siena 5-0 Saturday afternoon at Rice Oval. Game two of the doubleheader was suspended in the third inning with Iona leading 6-3. Sophomore Sarah Shutz led the way offensively in the opener, driving in three runs in the win.
The Gaels got all the runs their would need in the first inning, tallying two runs in the frame. Junior Allison Hand led off with a double down the left field line, followed by a single by freshman Kelsey Long, bringing Hand to third. After Long stole second putting two runners in scoring position, Shutz brought them home on a line drive to right field, putting Iona up 2-0.
A two-out rally led to the Gaels' third run in the bottom of the third. Freshman Kristen Turner started the rally, hitting a double to right field. After Schutz was hit by a pitch, senior Katie Jansson scored Turner on a single to center field, giving the Gaels the 3-0 advantage.
In the fourth, the Gaels expanded the lead by working three walks. Argyle led off with a single up the middle. After a double off the bat of freshman Katie Newton, Hand walked to load the bases. Long brought Argyle home on a ground ball to second. After Turner worked an 11-pitch walk to re-load the baes, Schutz walked to bring in her third run of the game to increase the lead to 5-0.
Argyle pitched seven innings, striking out nine, with the lone hit coming off a single in the bottom of the fourth. Siena starter Jessika-Jo Sandrini took the loss for the Saints, allowing eight hits, three walks and five runs in four innings of work.
Game two is set to be completed Monday afternoon, following the Gaels' MAAC doubleheader with Marist Sunday afternoon.
