POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Iona College women's water polo team completed its 2014 season Sunday afternoon with a 14-7 victory over Villanova in the consolation game of the 2014 MAAC Women's Water Polo Championship, held at Marist's McCann Natatorium.
Senior Amy Olsen led the Gaels with four goals. Olsen, 2014 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, finishes the season with 107 goals and her career with an Iona record 368 goals. First Team All-MAAC member Erika Lauraitis scored three, while Katie Stelnicki and Hannah Cross scored twice. Rebecca Mathews, Dana Andrea and Taylor Silva registered one goal apiece for Iona.
The Gaels never looked back, grabbing a 5-1 lead after the first quarter. Iona scored five more goals in the second period, taking a 10-2 lead into halftime. The Wildcats outscored Iona 2-0 in the third period, cutting the Gaels' lead to 10-4 after three. The Maroon & Gold outscored Villanova 4-3 in the fourth quarter to claim the seven goal victory.
The Gaels finished out their season with a final record of 15-16 and 10-4 in MAAC play.
