Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, NY - A gave-saving diving catch by Stony Brook RF Kevin Krause stranded the bases loaded and allowed the Seawolves to hold on to a 6-4 win over the Iona College baseball team in non-conference action at City Park. The Gaels (6-15) out hit Stony Brook 15-10, but couldn't make up the two-run difference on the scoreboard.
Stony Brook scored without the benefit of a hit in its first at bat. With one out, SS Cole Peragine was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a wild with and crossed the plate on an error for the game's first run.
The Gaels tied the score in the bottom of the third. With two down, junior LF Jimmy Guiliano laced a ground-rule double down the right field line to score senior CF Joe Torres from second base.
Iona scored three times in the fourth inning. After quickly loading the bases following a groundout to start the inning, Torres' RBI base-on-balls was followed by sophomore SS Vinny DeMaria's RBI poke through the right side of the infield Two batters later after a pitching change, sophomore DH Carmine Palummo beat out a slow roller to the right side for Iona's third tally.
Stony Brook answered with three runs of its own in the next half inning. A two-out, two-run single by CF Toby Handley was the big blow.
The Seawolves got a go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning. Caputo doubled to the left field fence on the first pitch he saw and was sacrificed to third base. Catcher Anthony Italiano mirrored his teammate from two batters before and scored Caputo to make the score 5-4.
Italiano struck again in the ninth, driving home Handley with a one-out RBI single.
The Gaels had their chances for additional tallies but stranded the bases loaded three times, the final one a heartbreaker in the bottom of the ninth. Torres belted a two-out, bases loaded, 3-2 offering to right centerfield. Krause made a diving play going back on the ball to end the game and save the win.
Sophomore LHP John Nargoski tossed the first 4.1 innings allowing three earned runs on four hits with one strikeout in the no decision. Sophomore RHP Jake Kurz took the loss in relief, pitching two innings while allowing a run on four hits. Rookie RHP Vinny Martin finished the final 2.2 innings and looked sharp by allowing just three base runners and striking out two batters.
Guiliano and freshman RF Kyle DiVico led the Gaels three hits apiece. Russo and sophomore 1B Christian Choman each had two hits in the contest. It was Choman's third straight multiple-hit effort after his two infield singles. Senior 2B Bobby Vitulano was the only starter without a hit, but walked three times in five plate appearances.
Italiano was 3-for-5 with his two late-inning RBI. RHP Cameron Stone earned the win in relief while Brian Tatelman earned his second save.
The Gaels continue a five-game home stand tomorrow against LIU Brooklyn at 3:30 pm at City Park.
