NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona College men's basketball rising junior A.J. English has been selected as a college counselor at the adidas Nations Global 2014, the fifth annual event held this year at the Next Level Sports complex in Garden Grove, CA from Jul. 31 - Aug. 4.
Twenty-eight of the nation's top collegiate players were selected to participate as counselors at the elite skills camp. The counselors were chosen to assist team coaches in the mentoring of teams representing Africa, Asia, Canada and Latin America in addition to American high school performers. English will be joining representatives from Arizona, California, Clemson, Kansas, Louisville, LSU, Memphis, Michigan, NC State, Nebraska, Rhode Island, Saint Mary's and UCLA. The list of counselors includes Kansas' Perry Ellis, who English squared off against during the 2013-14 season.
The experience at adidas Nations provides expert training, drills, and games along with education and insight on off-court elements that are crucial to the success of a basketball career, such as nutrition, education, media training and community outreach.
English was an All-MAAC First Team and All-MBWA Second Team performer after his sophomore campaign in Maroon & Gold. He finished sixth in the MAAC in scoring, with 17.2 points per game and was the third leading playmaker with 4.3 assists per game. He was also third in the conference with 2.5 3FG per game and minutes played with 36.6 per contest. English bounced back with an outstanding sophomore campaign after being forced to the sidelines in the second half of his rookie campaign due to injury. He was the only non-senior named to the All-MAAC First Team and is a leading candidate to be honored as the 2014-15 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year.
