ALBANY, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Albany Friday evening at Bob Ford Field. The loss moved Iona to 1-3-1 on the season.
"I think we played extremely well tonight," said head coach Fernando Barboto. "We created great chances to score, but couldn't connect."
The Great Danes opened up a 2-0 lead on the Gaels in the first half, on two goals by Afonso Pinheiro. Pinheiro put Albany ahead 1-0 in the 34th minute before converting a penalty kick in the 43rd minute.
Albany extended its leadsenior Ignacio Maganto. to three in the 82nd minute on a goal by Leo Melgar from 18 yards out. Iona scored its lone goal of the contest in the 86th minute, when sophomore Alex Ramos tallied his career goal off an assist from
Overall, Iona was outshot by Albany 13-11, with the Great Danes holding a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Iona goalkeeper Jacobo Aparicio made five saves in net for the Gaels, while Albany's Tim Allen made three stops.
"Credit to Albany's goalkeeper, who had a magnificent game," said Barboto. "We are a very young team that needs to learn to takes its chances early and take the lead."
Iona resumes non-conference action Monday at FDU. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
