Men's Soccer Defeats FDU On The Road, 2-0

TEANECK, NJ - The Iona College men's soccer team moved to 2-3-1 on the season with a 2-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson Monday evening at University Stadium.

"We got a well-earned road win tonight," said head coach Fernando Barboto.  "Our concentration level was very high, and it helped us secure the shutout."

The Gaels delivered what turned out to be the game-winner in the 26th minute when FDU was whistled for a foul in the box. Senior midfielder Ignacio Maganto converted the penalty kick for his team-leading third goal of the season.

Iona extended its lead to 2-0 in the 74th minute on an own goal by the Knights. Senior midfielder Michael Holzer took a shot on the left side, causing an FDU defender to accidently knock the ball into the goal.

Iona held a 12-8 advantage in shots, with five on goal. The Knights held a 4-2 cushion in corner kicks.  Sophomore goalkeeper Julian Petrello earned the victory for the Gaels without recording a save, while FDU's Matthew Weigner registered three stops.

The Gaels are back in action Friday, when they travel to Connecticut for a 7:00 pm kickoff.
