NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team began Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action Tuesday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Siena College at Mazzella Field. Freshman midfielder Matias Correa's second half goal proved to be the difference in the contest.
The Gaels had several opportunites in the first half, collecting seven shots and 10 corner kicks. Iona's best chances in the opening period came on a shot by sophomore midfielder Alex Ramos in the 22nd minute that sailed just high and a header by sophomore forward Teddy Forson that barely went over the crossbar.
Following the intermission, Iona pushed the game-winner across in the 59th minute. After a shot by senior midfielder Ignacio Maganto was stopped by Siena netminder Josh Weiss, Correa gathered the loose ball and hit it into the top left of the net for his second goal of the season.
The Gaels were forced to play a man down for the final 3:41 when sophomore back Jordan Scarlett was sent off with his second yellow card of the contest. Siena had it best chance of the game on the ensuing free kick, when Alexander Tejera's header hit the crossbar.
Iona sophomore goalkeeper Julian Petrello made one save to record his second straight shutout, while Weiss made two saves for the Saints.
The Gaels are back in action Saturday (Oct. 4) when they travel to Rider for a 1:00 pm start.
