CAMBRIDGE, MA - The Iona College women's water polo team split the first two contests of a four-game weekend Saturday at the Harvard Invitational. In game one of the day, the Maroon & Gold fell to No. 9 San Jose State 16-5 before claiming a 17-4 victory over Connecticut College in game number two.
In the opener, the Spartans jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter, before nine goals in the second stanza gave them a 12-2 halftime lead.
San Jose State then outscored Iona 5-3 in the second half. Freshman Hannah Schultz led the Gaels with four goals in the contest, while senior Jordan Carmody recorded the other Iona tally.
In net, junior Dana Delucchi made 10 saves while freshman Britten Vilander recorded two stops.
Against the Camels, Iona raced out to a 5-0 lead after the first eight minutes before five more in the second quarter gave the Gaels a 10-2 halftime lead. Seven more second half tallies pushed Iona to a 13 goal victory.
Schultz once again led the Gaels in the scoring column, netting three goals.
Junior Meghan Mahoney, sophomores Rebecca Koshy and Darby Nevins, along with freshmen Megan Hofer and Devika Joshi each scored twice. Carmody, juniors Rebecca Mathews and Dana Andrea, and freshman Paige Neary each scored one goal.
In goal, Delucchi made five stops while Vilander recorded three saves.
The Gaels complete the Harvard Invitational with two games Sunday, beginning at 11:45 am against No. 11 Princeton.
