Box Score OLD WESTBURY, NY - The Iona College baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision to NYIT in non-conference action at Lorenzo Field. Eight Iona pitchers saw action in the mid-week defeat.
NYIT got on the scoreboard three batters into the contest following a leadoff double by 2B Joe Daru and a one-out, two-run home run by LF Louis Mele. The Bears scored a run in the third and two unearned in the sixth inning to account for their scoring.
The Gaels threatened in the seventh inning and scored their lone run when junior C Carmine Palummo came in from third on a double play ball. Freshmen RF Seth Hoagland, 3B Matt Flannery and CF Jon Budesa and junior 3B Zach Brown recorded Iona's hits.
Sophomore RHP Vinny Martin took the loss allowing the two first inning hits and runs. Rookie RHP Joe Derosa pitched two scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth, junior RHP Max Bruckner tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief and junior RHP John Daddino struck out the side in the eighth as the Maroon & Gold's most effective relievers.
Iona returns to MAAC action this weekend on the road when they travel to Rider for a three-game set. The Gaels and Broncs square off in a doubleheader Saturday before the series finale Sunday.
