NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College men's and women's swimming & diving programs fell at the hands of the visiting Seton Hall Pirates. The Gaels made a valiant comeback effort, winning the final six events of the meet, however it was too little to late.
The Iona men dropped a 161-113 decision, falling to 6-4 on the season. The Iona Women's team season mark evens at 6-6 with a 160-122 defeat.
On the women's side, sophomore Elizabeth Kaczmarek grabbed a pair of individual wins; she clocked in at 1:58.33 in the 200-yard Freestyle and later picked up the win in the 200-yard Individual Medley at 2:12.47. Alexandra DiBiase picked up a W in the 100-yard Butterfly.
For the men, Collin Purrman, Matthew Rothman and Jude Zamora each managed to touch the wall first in an event. Purrman claimed the 200-yard Individual Medley at 2:02.92; Rothman touched first in the 50-yard Free at 22.29, and Zamora took the 100-yard Butterfly at 53.88.
The Iona women's quartet of Jessica Schmidt, Natalie Bowman, Alex Aliapoulios and MaryEllen Mangione touched first with a time of 3:42.59 in the 400-yard Freestyle relay. The men's squad of Keegan Boisson-Yates, Rothman, Zamora and Christian Foti won the same event at 3:14.70.
Speaking of the meet, Coach Nick Cavataro commented, “Considering where we are in our training cycle – which is a high workload - we had some very strong swims tonight. We are quickly closing in on the MAAC Championship meet in February (10-13th) and every race becomes more and more meaningful. The group is working together well and I'm confident our results will be strong.”
The Gaels next face off against Pace University in Pleasantville, next Friday at 6pm
