Box Score NEWARK, DE – The Iona College men's basketball team was held to a season-low in points this evening as Delaware earned a non-conference 63-54 home victory at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Gaels were held to 34.5 percent (20-for-58) shooting from the field that included 25.9 percent (7-for-27) from beyond the arc. Jordan Washington led the effort with 17 points and eight rebounds while Jon Severe scored all 12 of his points in the second half.
The Blue Hens placed four players in double-figure scoring, led by Ryan Daly notching 18 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double. Anthony Mosley and Cazmon Hayes each went a perfect 6-for-6 from the line to respectively total 14 and 12 points. Delaware controlled a 40-34 rebounding margin to post a 28-18 points in the paint margin.
Iona's first advantage came at 19-18 as Washington knocked down a jumper with eight minutes remaining in the first period. The basket capped off a 13-4 run for the Gaels before Schadrac Casimir put the Gaels ahead for the second time at 23-22 with a 3-pointer. Delaware finished the half on a 9-5 run to claim a 31-28 lead at the intermission.
Washington finished six of the team's 10 field goals in the half to lead all scorers with 15 points during the opening 20 minutes. Rickey McGill picked up four assists on the made field goals. Delaware scored 14 of its points in the pain as Mosley tallied 10 points.
The Maroon & Gold cut the deficit to as low as two points at 35-33 less than three minutes into the second half as Deyshonee Much converted a 3-pointer. However, a 10-2 run for the hosts created the first double-digit lead of the game with 10:19 remaining.
Delaware created a lead as large as 15 points on two occasions during the final four minutes of play, both on 3-pointers. Severe helped cut the lead down to seven with 12 points in the last four minutes, however, time was not on the side of the Gaels as the Blue Hens closed out the nine-point victory with five made free throws.
Iona looks to quickly respond with a home conference game on Saturday against Marist. The MAAC contest is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
