Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College baseball team earned a 7-0 shutout victory over Stony Brook in non-conference action at City Park. A five-run fifth inning coupled with five Gael hurlers keeping the Seawolves at bay led to the win.
Seniors RF Kyle DiVico and SS Vinny DeMaria each had two hits to lead the Gaels. DeMaria, senior LF Travis Mistretta and sophomore 1B Matt Flannery each drove in a pair.
Junior RHP Jake Kurz earned the win. He tossed the first four innings in a designated start allowing three hits and a walk while recording a strikeout. Sophomore RHP Kyle Ackley pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning with a strikeout. Junior LHP Andrew Pucillo allowed one base runner via the walk in the sixth and seventh innings. Senior RHP Stephan Stafford worked out of a jam in the eighth to keep the game scoreless before junior LHP Andrew Camiolo retired the side in order in the final frame.
The Gaels got on the board in their first at bat. With one out, Mistretta drew a 10-pitch walk after falling behind 0-2. Freshman 2B Sean Breen ripped the first pitch he saw from Stony Brook starter LHP Kevin Kernan into the left centerfield gap to give Iona a 1-0 lead.
Iona scored five times in a decisive fourth inning. The Maroon & Gold quickly following a leadoff walk to Breen, a DiVico ground-rule double and another walk to sophomore DH Lou Matarazzo. DeMaria's line drive to right center field scored the first two runs. After rookie 3B Clay Felice recorded his first of two sacrifice bunts with runners on first and second base in the contest, Flannery drove in Iona's third run of the frame. The carousel kept turning as sophomore C Joseph Lovecchio drew a walk to reload the bases. Two batters later Mistretta's seeing-eye single found the hole between first and second base to plate the final two runs in the inning.
The Gaels seventh run of the contest came an inning later. Matarazzo and DeMaria led off the inning with back-to-back base hits and were advanced by Felice on a sac bunt. Flannery drove in Matarazzo with a sacrifice fly to right field to give Iona all the runs it needed.
The Gaels return to MAAC play this weekend when they travel to Buffalo, NY to take on Canisius at Demske Sports Complete on Saturday and Sunday.
