Box Score 2 BUFFALO, NY - Canisius took a doubleheader from the Iona College baseball team to begin a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series at Demske Sports Complex. The Griffs took the opener 10-0 and came from behind late in the nightcap to earn a 7-6 win.
Senior IF Matt Byrne and rookie IF Fran Kinsey recorded Iona's hits in game one. The home team scored twice in the first inning to plate the only runs it needed.
Junior RHP Bill Maier took the loss in 5.1 innings of work.
In game two, Iona jumped out to a 3-0 lead after its turn at bat in the third inning. Kinsey doubled with two on and one out to score senior RF Kyle DiVico from second base start the rally. Sophomore CF Jon Budesa scored one batter later on a base hit by rookie 2B Sean Breen. Senior C Carmine Palummo's RBI fielder's choice brought Kinsey home.
After Canisius got a run back in the bottom of the third, the Gaels regained a three run advantage in the top of the fifth following a Breen sacrifice fly.
The Golden Griffins exploded for six runs in the next half inning to take the lead for good. Iona cut the deficit to the final score in the sixth inning as Byrne hit a two-run home run over the right field fence in the frame.
Five different Gaels recorded hits with Byrne and Breen recording multiple RBI in the loss. Sophomore RHP Joe DeRosa allowed four runs (two earned) over four-plus innings in the no decision. Sophomore RHP Jared Finkel was tagged with the loss.
The two teams complete the series tomorrow at noon.
