Box Score 2 NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College baseball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader to Niagara in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at City Park. The Purple Eagles scored 13 runs in the final four innings to defeat the Gaels 18-5 in the opener before getting the nightcap's lone run in the top of the eighth inning in game two.
Senior RF Kyle DiVico led the Gaels with three hits and two runs scored including an RBI triple in the fourth inning, his first of the season. Junior DH Lou Matarazzo and freshman 3B Fran Kinsey each collected two hits in the loss.
Junior RHP Bill Maier took the loss, tossing the first five innings.
In game two, both starters matched zeroes through their six innings of work. Iona sophomore RHP Joe DeRosa allowed no runs on four hits with no walks while striking out two batters and Niagara sophomore LHP Cody Eckerson gave up five hits and a walk with three strikeouts while each earned a no-decision. Niagara scored the game's only run in their last at bat taking advantage of back-to-back doubles to lead off the frame.
Senior LF Travis Mistretta and sophomore CF Jon Budesa accounted for four of the Gaels five hits.
The two teams conclude the three game series Sunday morning at 10:00 am as they try to play ahead of the incoming inclement weather later in the afternoon. The game was originally scheduled for noon.
