Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Sophomore RHP Joe DeRosa tossed eight strong innings and senior LF Travis Mistretta belted a two-run home run in the fifth inning to lead the Iona College baseball team to a 3-2 win over Siena in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series finale at City Park.
DeRosa was masterful over his eight innings pitched, scattering seven hits with six strikeouts while allowing both runs in with two outs his final inning of work. Prior to allowing the two Siena tallies, DeRosa's season earned run average dipped under 2.00 for the season, after recording the final out, he still leads the MAAC with a 2.32 ERA.
The Gaels manufactured a run in the fourth inning to open the scoring. Back-to-back infield hits by sophomore 1B Lou Matarazzo and senior RF Kyle DiVico started the frame. DiVico attempted to sacrifice his teammate to second, but the bunt was just hard enough to get by the Siena pitcher for the infield single. Matarazzo was pushed to third on a fly ball by senior SS Vinny DeMaria and scored three pitches later on a sac fly by senior DH Alex Beckett.
The fifth inning began inauspiciously for the Gaels with two quick outs. Freshman 2B Sean Breen drew a seven pitch walk to put a runner on first. Mistretta crushed the second pitch he saw over the right field fence for his fourth home run of the season. It was his first career home run at City Park and just the second for the Gaels in four seasons at the pitcher friendly ballpark.
With his pitch count rising up to triple digits in the eighth inning, DeRosa retired two of the first three batters he faced in the frame. With two out and a runner on second base, the Saints scored runs on back-to-back soft singles to the outfield.
Clinging to a 3-2 advantage in the final frame, sophomore RHP Patrick Ryan came on to close out the contest. Ryan made his first relief appearance of the season as Iona's rotation was modified due to short rest with this week's Thursday-Friday league schedule. He got two quick outs on fly balls to center field before putting a man on first base via the walk. Ryan struck out reserve SS Max Goione on four pitches to earn his first collegiate save.
Six different players recorded a hit for the Gaels including Breen, Mistretta, Matarazzo, DiVico, DeMaria and senior 3B Matt Byrne.
Iona completes its 2016 home slate Tuesday vs. Sacred Heart at 1:00 pm.
