Box Score WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ - With two out and a runner on third in the top of the 10th inning, rookie 2B Sean Breen ripped the first pitch he saw into left field to plate the go ahead run in the Iona College baseball team's 2-1 win at Monmouth in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at MU Baseball Field. Senior Alex Fishberg tossed the final four innings of the game to earn the win.
Breen was 2-for-5, scoring the Gaels first run in Iona's first at bat. After recording a one-out single, he advanced to second on an error and then scored on a second error following a sacrifice attempt by senior C Carmine Palummo.
The Hawks knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out single by RF Chris Gaetano.
Trading zeros until the 10th, senior SS Vinny DeMaria led off the frame with a base hit through the right side. Rookie PH Niko Switalla followed suit with a single of his own, though DeMaria was cut down at third base. Pinch running for Switalla, sophomore Jon Budesa came in the game and advanced to third base on a failed pickoff attempt. With two outs, Breen came through with the go-ahead run.
Monmouth threatened in the bottom of the 10th putting the potential game-winning run in scoring position. Fishberg ended the rally, striking out SS Robbie Alessandrine on a 1-2 pitch on the seventh pitch of the at bat to secure the win.
Sophomore RHP Patrick Ryan tossed the first 4.2 innings of the contest, allowing a run on four hits with three strikeouts. Junior LHP Andrew Camiolo closed out the fifth and recorded an out in the sixth, both via the strikeout. Sophomore RHP Kyle Ackley finished the sixth inning before Fishberg came on to close the game. Fishberg allowed two hits and had five strikeouts and allowed one intentional walk.
The Gaels return home for a three-game series with Siena beginning Thursday afternoon.
