Box Score RIVERDALE, NY – The Iona College men's basketball team outscored Manhattan College by 15 in the second half to capture an 82-67 MAAC road victory this evening at Draddy Gymnasium.
Schadrac Casimir led the effort with 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting that included 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in addition to a 4-for-4 performance from the line. Meanwhile, Jon Severe posted 18 points, four rebounds and two steals while Rickey McGill chipped in 12 points, five assists, four rebounds, three steals and two blocks in a team-high 33 minutes for the Gaels (11-8, 4-4 MAAC).
Four 3-pointers helped Zavier Turner tally a team-best 20 points for the Jaspers (7-12, 2-6 MAAC). Zane Waterman converted 7-of-9 free throws towards 15 points.
Manhattan led in the first half by as many as eight points on two occasions just around six minutes into the game. The Maroon & Gold fought off the hot start for the hosts, eventually claiming the lead at 23-22 on a Jan Svandrlik free throw with 7:21 remaining.
Following a pair of free throws from Na'Quan Council to extend the Jasper margin to three points with four seconds remaining, McGill drove the inbounds pass to half court and sank a half court buzzer beater to tie the game at 43-43 at halftime. Severe led all scorers with 13 points in the half while Turner added 12 for Manhattan and Casimir was perfect on three field goals and four free throws for 11 points.
A Taylor Bessick layup with 11:18 left in regulation not only tied the game at 59-59 for Iona, it also started a 25-8 run to close out the game. The next three field goals for the Gaels all came from behind the arc followed by two straight baskets from Jordan Washington to extend the lead to 11 points twice.
Deyshonne Much and McGill each pushed the lead to its largest of the game, 16 points, with a layup and free throw, respectively, with about two minutes remaining. Neither team scored in the final 1:20 as the Maroon & Gold secured the 15-point victory.
After shooting 35.3 percent (12-for-34) in the first half, Iona converted 50.0 percent (16-for-32) of its field goals in the final period and held Manhattan to 33.3 percent (8-for-24) in the final 20 minutes. The victory also snaps a five-game away from home losing streak for the Gaels, dating back to Thursday, December 22.
