HAMDEN, CT – The Iona College men's soccer team won its second consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Wednesday afternoon against Quinnipiac. Junior forward Killian Colombie netted his first goal of the season early in the second half to carry the Gaels to their 1-0 victory.
The game-winning goal came in the 50th minute and began with sophomore defender Malcolm Moreno brought the ball up along the sideline. He fed a long cross to Colombie near the far post who netted it low past the Bobcat keeper, sophomore Chrysostomos Iakovidis.
Quinnipiac outshot Iona 8 to 2 over the final thirty minutes, but sophomore Juan Alcantara was only tested with one on shot target over the entirety of the second half. Overall, Iona's keeper made three saves in route to his second consecutive shutout.
Overall the Gaels were outshot 14 to 6, and Iona found itself down in corner kick chance 5 to 3. There were 20 fouls called against the Maroon & Gold compared to seven for the Bobcats.
Freshman Tomas Jamett had a team-high two shots, one of which was on goal. Seniors Joshua Calderon and Matias Correa, along with freshman Lenworth Lopez, all had an additional go at goal.
With the victory, Iona has elevated itself into third place in the MAAC standings as of Wednesday evening.
Iona's next game is at home on Saturday, Oct. 14 against Fairfield. The Gaels will be at the center of Iona homecoming, kicking off at 3 PM on Mazzella Field.
