NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College women's basketball team fell behind early against Hofstra and couldn't regather itself in route to a 63-48 defeat. Freshman Jayden Eggleston scored a career-high six points and freshman Rebekah Justice had three blocks in her first collegiate start.
The Pride controlled the game from start to finish, building up a 23-10 at the end of the first quarter. Sophomore Marianne Kalin scored 10 of her career-high 25 points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting in the opening frame. Kalin finished the game shooting 11-for-14 and gathering a career-best 11 rebounds.
Iona found itself down by as many as 32 with 7:29 remaining in the game. Hofstra shot 44% from the floor and managed to have a fluid offense despite hitting on just 18.2% of its three-point shots. Senior Olivia Askin netted a career-high 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting. The Gaels held Hofstra's leading scorers, senior Ashunae Durant and sophomore E'Lexus Davis, to just eight points on 4-of-10 shooting.
Junior Alexis Lewis led Iona with 10 rebounds in addition to five points. Junior Treyanna Clay had a team-high nine points on 3-for-6 shooting. The Maroon & Gold had just seven assists on 17 field goals, all coming from seven different players.
The Gaels return to competition on Saturday, Dec. 9 against Fordham at 1 PM.
