Water Polo Tops St. Francis Brooklyn On Senior Day 15-7

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College Women's Water Polo team improved to 5-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, topping the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers (1-7) on Senior Day, 15-7. Prior to the contest, the Maroon & Gold honored four-year contributers Darby Nevins and Rebecca Koshy.

On the offensive side, two-time reigning MAAC Offensive Player of the Week junior Hannah Schultz added another seven goals on eight shots. Junior Kayla Allen added three goals, Koshy scored two, and Nevins, junior Megan Hofer and freshman Regan Warmoth connected for one tally.

In net, junior Britten Vilander picked up her eight win of the season, stopping seven Terriers' shots, collecting six steals and dishing out two assists.

Iona controlled the game throughout, scoring the game's first three goals coming from the hand of Schultz. St. Francis cut the deficit to a pair on a goal with 11 ticks remaining the quarter. Koshy connected with her first goal 1:10 into the second quarter, followed by another Schultz goal 1:31 later to open a 5-1 Gael advantage. Koshy and Warmoth added another two goals before St. Francis scored a goal with under one minute remaining as Iona went into the half up 7-2.

Schultz scored the first goal of the third quarter 1:34 in, but was answered by two Terriers' goals in a 1:30 span to put the score at 8-4. Nevins scored her lone tally with 3:10 remaining in the frame and was followed up by two goals by Allen. With 14 ticks left, the Terriers found the back of the net to put the score at 11-5 after 24 minutes. Iona outscored the opposition 4-2 in the final frame led by goals from Allen, two from Schultz and the final from Hofer.

The Gaels return to the pool this weekend as they partake in three conference matchups against Marist and Siena in Brooklyn on Saturday, followed by a battle with Villanova in Staten Island on Sunday.
