Iona Falls In First-Ever Matchup With Central Michigan

The Iona College women's basketball fell at home against Central Michigan by a final score of 82-39.

It was the first meeting between the two foes in the history of the program. Junior transfer Morgan Rachu kept her streak of double-digit scoring outputs alive, amassing 11 points on 4-12 shooting.

GAME SUMMARY

Redshirt sophomore opened up the scoring for either side, connecting on a short jumper. Iona's lead was short-lived, allowing Central Michigan to score nine unanswered points and the next 16 out of 18 before head coach Billi Chambers called timeout. The offensive onslaught continued from the 20th highest scoring offense in all of Division I following the timeout; the Chippewas closed out the first quarter on a 12-2 run.

CMU scored the first 11 points of the second period, extending their lead to 31 before the Iona offense even reached double digits. A Rachu three-pointer changed that, but the Chippewas continued to pour it on, closing out the first half with a 49-16 lead.

The Gaels put together their best 10 minutes coming out of the locker room for the second half, scoring 14 points in the quarter. They got contributions from three different freshmen: Juana Camilion, Shyan Mwai and Gabrielle Joseph. Despite being in foul trouble late in the third and into the fourth, Iona relied on Joseph's presence and she hang tough with the Chippewa bigs. The rookie finished with six points (3-5 FG) and two rebounds, both of them coming on the offensive end of the floor, before committing her fifth and final foul with 2:29 left in the game.

Central Michigan outscored Iona 13-9 in the final frame en route to an 82-39 win on the Gaels home floor.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Rachu's 11 points, a season-low for the junior, extended her streak of scoring at least 10 points to six games.
  • Lesko's team-high four assists also extended her streak of dishing out at least two dimes a contest to six games.
  • Mwai set a new career-best, scoring 10 points on 40% shooting from the field. She connected on one-of-two tries from long range.
  • Iona's 39 points scored is the third-lowest scoring output of the season and the 82 points allowed is the second-most the squad has allowed this year.
  • Central Michigan's Presley Hudson entered the game averaging just under 25 points scored per game. Defensively, the Gaels limited her to 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting.
  • As a unit, Iona drew seven charges. Rachu and Lesko both took two apiece.
