DURHAM, NC – North Carolina Central scored five runs in each of the second and third innings on the way to a 12-2 win in the final game of a three-game series against the Iona College baseball team this afternoon.
Dominic Cuevas and Zach Michalski opened the scoring for the Eagles (9-3) in the second inning with RBI singles with Michalski later scoring on a wild pitch. Andrew Valchika added the final blow of the inning behind a two RBI single.
North Carolina Central added three more RBI singles in the third inning to set up Carter Williams with a two RBI double, pushing the advantage to 10-0 at the end of three.
With two outs in the top of the fourth,
Lou Matarazzo tallied a run for the Maroon & Gold (2-7) with a solo homerun to right field. Williams added another RBI single for the hosts in the fifth to highlight a two-run inning and push the advantage to 12-2.
The final run of the afternoon was scored by Tyler Buno as the senior led off with a double and later scored on a throwing error during a steal attempt of third.
Fran Kinsey and
Sam Punzi each tallied two walks for the Gaels while Matarazzo added a walk to his homerun in three at-bats.
Vinny Martin and
Jason Goetz each tossed a scoreless inning each with Martin picking up a strikeout in relief.
Iona returns to the diamond on Tuesday with a trip to Piscataway, NJ to face Rutgers at 3 pm.
