Schultz Becomes All-Time Scoring Leader In MAAC Split

VILLANOVA, PA – In two games for the Maroon & Gold, hosted by Villanova, the Iona College women's water polo team (10-22, 7-5) split contests with a 13-4 win against St. Francis Brooklyn  and a 15-4 defeat to Wagner. Senior Hannah Schultz became Iona's all-time leading goal scorer in the first game against the Terriers.
 
Schultz wasted little time against the Terriers, tying Amy Olsen's ('14) record of 367 career goals just 35 seconds into the game. One minute later she surpassed the record. She finished with three goals in the game. Schultz, who owns four of Iona's top-13 single-season goal records, now holds the Iona career goal-scoring record with 369. Entering Saturday, she ranked fourth in the MAAC with 81 goals on the season and scored four on the day.
 
Game 1: Iona 13, St. Francis Brooklyn 4
 
In a game in which the Maroon & Gold never trailed, the Iona Polo team handled the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers 13-4. Kayla Allen led the team with four goals on five shots and Schultz netted three goals on eight shots. Devika Joshi scored a pair and Megan Hofer, Danielle Hernandez, Rockett and Jordan Van Reeken each scored one apiece.

Britten Vilander had a strong game in net, making 13 saves and collecting two steals.
 
As a team, the Gaels nabbed 11 steals, drew seven kickouts and were ejected eight times. The team connected on 4-8 man-up opportunities.
 
Iona opened up a 5-0 lead after the first eight minutes. Schultz tallied the first two goals and was followed by Allen. With 2:24 remaining in the frame, Hernandez netted her second goal of the season and was followed by a Rockett powerplay goal with :36 seconds to play.
 
The Terriers scored the first two goals of the second quarter but was answered with goals by Schultz and Joshi. With 1:26 left in the half, the Terriers trimmed the Iona lead down to four. The teams went into the break with Iona leading 7-3.
 
The Maroon & Gold held the Terriers off the scoreboard in the third quarter and added three goals to the lead. With just over two minutes gone by, Schultz concluded her scoring on the powerplay. Joshi and Allen each scored powerplay goals over the next five minutes as Iona took a 10-3 lead after 24 minutes.
 
Iona continued to roll in the fourth quarter, receiving goals from Van Reeken, Allen and Hofer in the first four minutes. The terriers scored with 27 ticks remaining but the final horn sounded with Iona holding the nine-goal advantage.
 
Game 2: Wagner 15, Iona 4
 
In the night contest, the Gaels fells to the Wagner Seahawks 15-4. Van Reeken, Schultz, Hofer and Joshi tallied the Iona tallies. Normand and Allen were ejected with three kickouts. Britten Vilander made nine saves.
 
The Maroon & Gold put up 26 shots and drew seven kickouts.
 
Joshi put Iona on the board first just 34 ticks into the first quarter the defending MAAC Champs scored the next four over the next three minutes. Schultz and Van Reeken netted the next two to cut the Wagner lead to 4-3. The Seahawks scored the next two to take a 6-3 lead into the second quarter.
 
The Gaels were held off the scoresheet until their final tally coming from Hofer with 7:04 remaining in the third quarter.

The Gaels conclude their regular season tomorrow with a doubleheader in Philadelphia against host La Salle and Siena.
