NEW ROCHELLE, NY - A six-run first inning helped propel Canisius to a 11-0 victory and earn a three-game MAAC series sweep of the Iona College baseball team this morning at City Park.
The Golden Griffs (20-11, 9-3 MAAC) needed just three hits in the opening frame to collect six runs. Liam Wilson opened the scoring with a RBI double before scoring the second run himself on a wild pitch. Conner Morro added two RBI in the inning with a single to push Canisius ahead in the early going.
On the mound for the Griffs, Andrew Sipowicz improved to 5-1 on the year with six innings of work in the start behind three strikeouts and only one hit allowed, which was surrendered in the sixth inning as
Brian Picone led off for the Maroon & Gold (8-23, 3-8 MAAC) with a single up the middle. Sipowicz was able to work around the lead off hit by producing a fly out and a double play.
After scoring once in the fourth, Canisius added a pair of runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings as Kyle Wagner and Alvin Vega combined for three innings and five strikeouts out of the bullpen.
Stephen Hansen helped settle down the Canisius attack by tossing 5.2 innings in relief with three strikeouts.
Henry Conroy pitched a scoreless ninth in the effort.Â
Jacob Martins led the Griffs with three hits on the day to go along with a run and a RBI. Morro finished with two RBI and two hits while Gage Lanning scored twice on two hits.
Iona returns to City Park on Tuesday to host Stony Brook for a 3 pm non-conference contest.Â
