NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The visiting Stony Brook pitching staff was able to hold the Iona College baseball team to one hit this afternoon on the way to a 6-0 non-conference victory at City Park.
The combination of five pitchers for the Seawolves (20-15) allowed just one hit and two walks over nine innings, highlight by Kevin Kernan moving to 3-0 on the season. Kernan was second in line on the mound with one strikeout in 2.2 innings of work after taking over for start Sam Turcotte, who opened the first 3.1 innings with four strikeouts and one hit allowed. Brian Morrisey, Connor Clark and Nick Montefusco each added an inning of relief with Clark striking out two.
Offensively, Stony Brook scored three runs in each of the fifth and eighth inning to collect six runs on the day. John Tuccillo scored the opening run on a single by Nick Grande. Both Grande and Brandon Janofsky later scored on a double from Bobby Honeyman. Grande was once again involved in the action in the eighth, scoring the first run after leading the inning off with a walk. Andruw Gazzola drove in a run with a single followed by Tanner Cooper scoring the final run on a wild pitch.Â
Mario Ferraioli tossed the first two innings in the start for Iona (8-24), striking out three in the process.
Lou Matarazzo and
Tyler Bruno each recorded two outs on the mound without allowing a hit.
Sean Scales notched a hit from the plate.
The Maroon & Gold quickly return to City Park on Wednesday to host Yale for a 3:30 pm non-conference contest. The game marks the fifth of nine straight home games for the Gaels.
