Gaels Defeated on Kids Day by Canisius

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's basketball team was taken down on Thursday by Canisius, 48-40. In front of a young and energetic crowd on Kids Day at the Hynes Center, the Maroon & Gold's comeback attempt fell short.

GAME SUMMARY

The Gaels played a strong first quarter, particularly in the closing minutes. Iona answered a 6-0 Canisius run with a three-pointer from Barefield to tie things up early on. The Maroon & Gold closed out the quarter on a 7-0 run, capped off by another three ball from redshirt sophomore Monica Barefield, putting the home team on top, 15-10.

Canisius bounced back offensively in the second frame, led by D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks, who buried a couple of threes and finished the quarter with 10 points. Iona was outscored 14-5 in the period, heading into the locker room down 24-20.

Both teams battled coming out of the halftime break, continuously trading baskets back-and-forth. The Gaels converted on all six of its free throw attempts in the quarter, and got contributions from Barefield and rookie Juana Camilion from beyond the arc. Two free throws from junior transfer Morgan Rachu at the end of the quarter put Iona down four, 36-32, heading into the fourth quarter.

A layup from redshirt sophomore Tori Lesko to open the final frame made it a one-possession deficit for Iona, but Canisius' defense held Iona scoreless over the next seven minutes, and they built a 44-34 lead with just over three minutes to play. Sara Hinriksdottir scored the final four points for the Griffs, closing things out at the Hynes Center.
