Gaels Have Rough Shooting Night in Riverdale

RIVERDALE, NY – The Iona College women's basketball team lost on Friday at Manhattan, 55-33. The Gaels shot just over 21% from the field in the loss.

GAME SUMMARY

Iona opened up the game picture perfect; Redshirt sophomore Tori Lesko got to the line and converted on both tries. After an errant pass led to a steal for Iona, Lesko hit freshman Juana Camilion with a beautiful behind the back pass for a wide-open corner-three. Manhattan fought back, but a Morgan Rachu three sent the Maroon & Gold into the first media timeout of the game leading 10-7. The Jaspers closed out the final four-plus minutes of the quarter on 10-1 run. The one Gael point came from the charity stripe with 24 seconds left.

The second quarter was a rough one for both offenses. The two teams combined to shoot 5-37 from the field and combined for just 10 total points. Manhattan went into the half with a comfortable 25-13 lead.

The Jaspers scored the first basket of the second half, a three-pointer to extend the lead to 15 points. The two cross-town rivals traded baskets for the next six minutes, with Manhattan maintaining the 15-point cushion. They closed out the quarter with a 16-point advantage.

The Gaels had another rough quarter to close things out. The Jaspers built up a 48-29 lead with under five minutes to go. Red shirt sophomore Monica Barefield scored  a team-best seven points in the quarter, but Iona could not slow down Pollock and Davis, who combined for 11 points in the final frame.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • The Gaels made just 11 field goals in the loss. Offensively, only two players for the Maroon & Gold made more than one shot attempt.
  • Iona's bench was outscored 31-10. Manhattan also scored 21 points off of turnovers compared to Iona's three.
  • Lesko drew five charges in the loss. The redshirt sophomore drew two each in the second and third quarters.
  • The 33 points scored is the Gaels' lowest point total offensively this year. Iona's 13 points scored at the half is its lowest point total scored in any one half this season.
  • Lesko led the way offensively, scoring a team-high 12 points. It marks the ninth time in her career she has scored in double-figures and it is just the second time this season the Harrisburg, PA native has led the offensive unit in scoring.

UP NEXT

Iona heads up to Poughkeepsie, NY for a face-off with the Marist Red Foxes on Monday, Jan. 21 at 7:00 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for the 20thof January, but the impending inclement weather has pushed things back. The game can be watched on ESPN+.
