Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Jack Clark

Iona Surpassed by Marist on Monday Night

Marist shot a blistering 52.8% from the field in the game.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Marist Red Foxes took down the Iona College women's basketball team on Monday night, 76-36. Marist shot a blistering 52.8% from the field in the game.

GAME SUMMARY

Alana Gilmer was a force to be reckoned with in the first quarter, scoring nine points over the first five minutes of the game on a perfect 4-4 shooting from the floor. Grace Vander Weide put in a layup to give the Red Foxes a 16-5 lead before an Iona turnover forced the first media timeout of the game. Out of the stoppage, the Gaels got a stop defensively and followed that up with a three-pointer from redshirt sophomore Tori Lesko. Another stop led to another three for Iona, this time from junior transfer Morgan Rachu, cutting the deficit to five. Marist scored the final seven points of the quarter to extend the lead to double-figures. Marist concluded the quarter shooting 9-13 from the field.

The Red Foxes were relentless, scoring the first six points of the second quarter, forcing Iona head coach Billi Chambers to use her first timeout. Redshirt junior Jodi-Marie Ramil stopped the Marist run with a bucket inside, but Marist had an answer on the very next possession. Every time Iona scored in the second quarter, the Red Foxes answered with a bucket of their own, stringing multiple together at different periods of the quarter. Iona trailed 42-20 at the end of the first half.

Freshman Gabrielle Joseph scored the first two baskets of the second half for Iona, reducing the deficit to 20 points on two occasions. The lead grew as large as 27 when Lovi Henningsdottir knocked down a jumper with just over a minute to play in the frame. That bucket forced another Iona timeout; out of the timeout, the Gaels scored thanks to a nice high-low insert from Shayla Middlebrooks to Ramil down low.

Marist extended its lead to 30-plus points in the fourth quarter, opening the frame on an 11-0 run. Ramil, who finished one point shy of the first double-double of her career, found the bottom of the net to stop the run. The Gaels were eventually held scoreless for the final four minutes of regulation, losing this one.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Ramil set career-highs in points (nine) and rebounds (11). It is just the third time this season a member of the Maroon & Gold has finished with double-digit rebounds.
  • Middlebrooks also set a new personal best with seven rebounds in the loss, helping Iona outrebound the Red Foxes.
  • Lesko dished out a season-high six assists across 38 minutes of play. The redshirt sophomore also connected on two three-point tries, the first two of her season thus far.
  • Marist led wire-to-wire in this contest and shot 52.8 percent from the field. The Red Foxes held the Gaels to a below-30 percent shooting percentage.
  • Marist was called for just four fouls the entire night, only allowing four free throw attempts. Iona connected on three of them.
  • The Gaels' shooting percentage decreased every quarter, culminating with a 2-14 FG, six-point fourth quarter performance.
  • The Maroon & Gold finished the game without recording a blocked shot, marking the eighth time this season the team finished with a zero in that column.
  • The Red Foxes now lead the all-time series 43-16. Chambers is victorious in just one of her last five matchups with Giorgis.

UP NEXT

Iona will be welcoming in the Fairfield Stags to the Hynes Center on Thursday, Jan. 24. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. from New Rochelle, with both programs looking for their first win here in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.
