NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College women's basketball team could not hold off Fairfield on Thursday night. The Stags were solid down the stretch from the free throw line, especially Sam Kramer, who finished with a team-high 13 points.
GAME SUMMARY
Things started slow on both sides, with just one basket apiece from either side by the time the first media timeout rolled around. Kramer and Nibbelink found the bottom of the net from three-point land after the timeout on the floor, leading to an eventual 9-0 run for Fairfield.
Trailing 14-5 after one quarter, the two teams traded baskets again to start the frame, but the Stags managed to string together three straight makes to extend their lead to 13 with just over a minute left. The Gaels got a layup from junior
Jodi-Marie Ramil in the final minute, going into halftime down 22-11.
Iona got as close as seven points twice in the early portion of the third quarter, but another timely run for the Stags propelled them to a 36-19 lead in the closing seconds of the third frame. A free throw and a wide-open layup gave the Gaels life as they headed into the fourth quarter down 36-22.
Fairfield continued to match Iona basket for basket in the fourth quarter, never allowing the Maroon & Gold to really get within striking distance. Despite a game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter for Iona, the Stags were able to keep the opposition at bay thanks to great shooting from the line in the closing minutes. Fairfield earned its first league win of the season, downing Iona 55-42.
