SMITHFIELD, RI – The Iona College men's and women's swimming and diving team made their first of two trips to Rhode Island in a seven-day span today, ending up on the losing end of both meets to the host Bryant.
Â
The men battled to a 175-119 defeat to fall to 2-1 on the season and the women lost to the defending NEC Champions, 222-72.
Â
The meet saw five Iona swimmers win races in the highly-contested event that had over a dozen events decided by a second or less.
Â
On the men's side, sophomore
Daniel Hadary led the charge with a pair of wins, including a 1:45.19 in the 200-freestyle, which was the top spot in a 1-2-3 finish for the Gaels, along with classmate
Aidan Holbrook (1:45.40) and freshman
David Son (1:45.97). Hadary also took the 500-freestyle at 4:48.48.Â
Â
Other winners on the men's side included senior co-captain Matthew Anderson who touched .27 ahead of Bryant's Robert Davis, finishing at 9:52.49. Sophomore
Jalen Ramjohn claimed the top spot in the 100-butterfly at 51.89 with teammate
Conor Mullin taking the second spot at 52.32.
Â
The lone Iona woman to touch first was freshman
Taylor Spillman, who won her first collegiate race in the 200-butterfly by .01 at 2:11.07.
Â
"You have to give Bryant a lot of credit, they really swam well today at their home pool. We had our chances to grab some wins, but just couldn't get to the wall," head coach
Nick Cavataro said. "We will be better I'm sure of that. We have a very challenging stretch ahead with Providence, Monmouth and Binghamton the next 3 weeks as well."
