BUFFALO, NY – The Iona College women's basketball lost at Canisius to conclude its annual Buffalo trip. Redshirt sophomore
Tori Lesko was the leading scorer for the Gaels with nine points.
GAME SUMMARY
Things started relatively slow at the Koessler Athletic Center between the Griffs and the Gaels. The first media timeout came with just under four minutes to play in the first quarter and Canisius led 9-8. Junior guard
Morgan Rachu scored the first six points for the Maroon & Gold, and then defense turned into offense for Iona as
Monica Barefield was the beneficiary of a fastbreak bucket. Iona's offense stalled after the media though, scoring just one basket over the final three minutes. Canisius scored the final seven points of the period to close it out with a 19-10 lead.
The Gaels had a tough time stopping the Griffs inside, inducing two timeouts from head coach
Billi Chambers in a span of 18 seconds. Canisius was in the midst of its 10-0 run to open the quarter when the timeouts were called. A
Shyan Mwai bucket ended that run, but Iona still had difficulty slowing down Canisius throughout the rest of the frame. Canisius headed for the locker room with a 38-19 advantage.
The Gaels played a very efficient third quarter, particularly on the defensive end; Canisius scored just seven points in the third and Iona controlled the final couple of minutes, dominating inside and on the offensive glass. Iona went to the line nine times, but converted on just four of the nine tries. The Maroon & Gold locked in defensively, holding Canisius scoreless for the final three-plus minutes.
Lesko was huge for Iona to open up the final frame, having a hand in the first seven Gael points. She began the quarter converting on a three-point play before putting in another and spoon-feeding a teammate with a beautiful no-look entry pass. After six straight points from Canisius, there was strong pressure from Iona on the defensive side of the ball that forced a timeout. Despite their best quarter of the night, it was too little too late for the Gaels, as they fell to the Griffs, 67-47.
