Water Polo Concludes Regular Season With Defeat To Marist

VILLANOVA, PA - After locking up the third seed in the upcoming Metro Atlantic Athletic Championship yesterday with two narrow conference wins, the Iona women's water polo team fell 13-5 to Marist this afternoon at Villanova University.

Freshman Jillian Schultz led the Gaels (15-16, 9-5 MAAC) with two goals while sophomore Kate Schmitt, sophomore Jordan Van Reeken and freshman Maeve Wydan each scored once.
In goal, redshirt junior Jordin Hale made 11 saves on 29 Marist shots and five steals, while allowing 12 goals. In the final three minutes of the match, freshman goalie Christina Chiappini made one save on three shots and one steal, while allowing a five-meter penalty score.

On defense, the Gaels made 15 steals with three by Van Reeken, who also blocked one shot. Iona drew 11 Marist exclusions with five by Schutz, while being ejected eight times. The Gaels turned the ball over nine times.

In the first period, Marist scored seven unanswered goals shots, including a five-meter penalty score, for a 7-0 lead going into the second period. Iona failed to score on eight attempts on goal.

After the Red Foxes added another score, Schultz's skip shot ended the Gael offensive drought as Iona trailed 8-1 with 4:36 left in the second quarter. Following another Marist goal, Wydan pulled Iona back within seven 9-2 at the 3:25 mark. The Red Foxes tacked on another goal for a 10-2 halftime advantage.

Neither team scored in the third period until Schmitt's goal with 35 ticks left cut the Marist lead to 10-3 going into the final period.

With 25 seconds gone in the final period, Van Reeken pulled Iona within six 10-4. After Marist tacked on two scores, Schultz hit her second goal on a lob shot with 2:15 left, followed by a Marist five-meter penalty shot goal.

UP NEXT

Iona will be the No. 3 seed when it travels to Poughkeepsie for its 17th consecutive appearance in the MAAC Championships on Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28.
