NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College women's basketball suffered a tough loss at home to Monmouth, surrendering 11 straight points in the final 83 seconds and losing 56-50. Sophomore

GAME SUMMARY
From the jump, the defense set the tone on both sides. With over five minutes gone off the clock, the score was 2-2, with each team combining to shoot 2-11 from the floor. Lucy Thomas' layup at the 4:10 mark made it a 4-2 game in favor of the Hawks.
Â
Camilion got on the board with a fast-break layup after a steal, knotting things at four apiece. The Hawks held the Gaels scoreless from that point on, scoring two baskets of their own over the final three-plus minutes and taking an 8-4 lead into the second quarter.
Â
Morgan Rachu and
Paulla Weekes opened the second frame with baskets in the first minute of action, giving the Maroon & Gold a 9-8 advantage. The teams traded points back and forth over the next couple of minutes, but three straight scores from Adriana Zelaya turned a three-point deficit into a three-point advantage for the visitors.
Â
The Gaels went over four minutes in between baskets, with Camilion's layup with 2:32 to play making it a 21-18 game. Iona kept it within a one-possession game heading into the break with a
Monica Barefield triple that banked in off the glass at the buzzer. Monmouth led 25-23 at the conclusion of the first half.
Â
A 7-0 run for the Gaels midway through the third period allowed them to retake the lead, 32-29. The Hawks followed with a 7-0 run of their own, allowing just one basket over the final 4:57 of the quarter and taking a slight 36-34 lead into the final frame.Â
Â
De'jah Williams played a solid couple of minutes offensively to begin the fourth quarter for Iona. She scored twice inside of the paint, completing a three-point play at the foul line on the latter of the two baskets to bring the Gaels within one point of Monmouth.
Â
Camilion's layup at the 6:16 mark gave Iona its first lead since the midway point of the third quarter. Sierra Green buried her team's lone trifecta of the evening 90 seconds later to take back the lead for her squad. The Maroon & Gold then took it back themselves behind five straight points from Camilion.
Â
What followed was a 13-3 run by Monmouth over the final 3:19 of regulation, including an 11-0 spurt across the closing 1:23 that propelled the Hawks to their fourth conference victory of the season.
