Iona Women's Water Polo Drops a Close One to Princeton

Princeton pulls away in final minutes as the Gaels comeback comes up short

Princenton, NJ - After 25 days of no games the Iona Women's Water Polo lose a wire to wire game to #21 ranked Princeton, 12-9. First half was back and forth as the Gaels looked at a one goal deficit heading to half time. 

GAME SUMMARY

On offense Iona was led by junior Jordan van Reeken with four goals, two from junior Laura Rockett, and one a piece from Maeve Wydan, Karsyn Stewart, and Danielle Hernandez. As a team the Maroon & Gold assisted on three goals with assists from Hernandez, van Reeken, and Stewart.

In net for Iona senior Jordin Hale recorded 15 saves, two steals and blocked three penalty shots. The Gaels also drew ten exclusions one a piece from Wydan and Stewart, two from Henandez and freshman Mia Tovar, and a team high four from van Reeken. Reeken would also add another team high with three steals.

The first four minutes was scoreless until the Tigers found the back of the net, the Maroon & Gold answer about 30 seconds later with van Reeken scoring her first of the night. Princeton would score the next two within 25 seconds of each other but Iona would make it a one goal deficit going into the second quarter. 

Iona scored the first two goals in the second to claim their only lead of the game but the tigers would take back over and take a one goal lead into half time. The third quarter did not help the Gaels as they were out scored 3-1 and faced a three goal hole going into the last eight minutes. 

The Maroon & Gold comeback came up just short with van Reeken making it a one goal game with three minutes left, Princeton was able to lock in on both ends getting stops and capitalized on the offensive side allowing them to pull away in the final minutes.         

UP NEXT

Iona is back in action at the Courtney Fisher Invitational hosted by Marist on Saturday February 22. The Gaels will play against Villanova and St. Francis Brooklyn.
