LOUDONVILLE, NY – The Iona College women's basketball team was defeated by Siena, 57-45, at the Alumni Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon. The Gaels could not rebound after an eight-point first half, including a one-point opening quarter.
GAME SUMMARY
Siena opened an 11-0 lead in the first quarter, holding the Gaels without a point for over seven minutes to begin the afternoon.
Jodi-Marie Ramil was fouled inside on a layup and hit one of two free throws with 2:16 left in the first frame, the first point of the game for Iona.Â

The Gaels finished the first quarter with just that point, going 0-7 from the field and 0-4 from downtown. The Saints led 13-1 after the first 10 minutes, getting a combined eight points from Sabrina Piper and Julia Hauer.

Iona's first made field goal of the game came with 5:44 left in the second quarter, making it an 18-3 deficit. Two minutes later,
Morgan Rachu converted on two tries from the charity stripe to make it 20-5. Iona went into the half down 24-8, after Rachu knocked down the team's first trifecta of the afternoon with just over a minute left in the period.Â

Siena's lead reached 20 points with 5:55 left in the third quarter when Hauer's basket inside made it 30-10. The Saints maintained their 20-point advantage until the final minute of the quarter, when free throws from
Juana Camilion and
Tori Lesko cut into the lead. Iona still trailed by 16 points entering the final frame.

Siena made the first two baskets of the fourth quarter, re-extending its lead to 20 points. Iona fought down the stretch, cutting into the Siena lead throughout the period, but the Gaels could never get it back to single-digits.
Shyan Mwai scored on a fastbreak with just under four minutes to play to make it 47-35. Siena answered with four straight points and held Iona without another point for the next 90 seconds, shutting down the Gaels' best chance at a comeback. Iona would fall, 57-45, to close out the weekend.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
- Hauer finished with a game-high 15 points off of the bench. The Saints had three other players in double figures as well: Amari Anthony (12), Piper (13) and Lala Watts (13). Barefield (10), Camilion (10) and Rachu (14) were Iona's leading scorers.
- Watts finished with a game-best 12 rebounds, notching a double-double. Tori Lesko's six rebounds were the most individually for the Gaels.
- Hauer dished out four of her team's nine assists. Barefield handed out four assists as well.
- Rayshel Brown was active defensively, coming away with a game-high four steals. Watts and Camilion had the only blocked shots of the afternoon.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Iona's eight first-half points are it's lowest total this season and the lowest in a half since November 11, 2011 when Iona scored seven first-half points in an eventual win over Stony Brook. The Gaels' one-point first quarter was the team's lowest scoring output in any quarter played this season.
- Barefield has played four career regular-season games against Siena, scoring at least 10 points in every one of those contests.
- Siena never trailed and its largest lead of the afternoon was 22 points in the third quarter.
- The Gaels shot 2-19 (10.5%) from the field in the first half. Iona was 1-10 (10%) from beyond the arc over the first 20 minutes of action. Three of the Gaels' eight first-half points came from the charity stripe.
- Nine of Iona's 11 active players for the afternoon took a shot in the first half, but just two registered a field goal. Eight total players contributed points by the end of the game.
- Siena scored 32 points in the paint and turned 23 Iona turnovers into 18 points.Â
- Iona was outrebounded 41-26. Siena grabbed as many defensive rebounds (26) as the Gaels had total rebounds.

- Marist went on the road and topped Quinnipiac, 64-51.
- Manhattan defeated Fairfield 51-38 in Riverdale.
- Rider cruised to an 87-48 victory over Canisius.
