Iona WBB Beat by Manhattan on Senior Night

Iona honored graduating seniors Monica Barefield, Shayla Middlebrooks, Morgan Rachu and Jodi-Marie Ramil prior to this evening’s contest.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Manhattan Jaspers outlasted the Iona College women's basketball team, 59-47, in the Gaels' home-finale. Iona honored graduating seniors Monica Barefield, Shayla Middlebrooks, Morgan Rachu and Jodi-Marie Ramil prior to this evening's contest.

GAME SUMMARY

The opening period was a quarter of scoring runs. The Gaels had the first, highlighted by two triples from Rachu, helping Iona build an early 10-2 advantage.

Manhattan scored seven straight points to pull within a point of the lead, but the Maroon & Gold registered the final five points of the frame to take a 15-9 lead. Rachu had as many first-quarter points as the entire Jaspers' team after a full 10 minutes.

Manhattan played a strong second quarter on both sides of the ball and retook the lead at the midway point. Another Rachu trifecta ended a two-and-a-half minute scoring drought and gave the Gaels a 20-18 edge.

Lizahya Morgan drained a three a minute later to push the score back in favor of the Jaspers. Manhattan carried a one-point advantage into the half after a scoreless final 90 seconds of the quarter.

Juana Camilion found Tori Lesko underneath the basket to open the scoring in the second half and once again give the Gaels a lead. Manhattan and Iona traded a basket back-and-forth to keep the game in the Gaels' favor before a 7-0 run for the visitors that gave them a 32-27 edge.

Rachu made it a one-possession game with another triple, her fourth of the contest. Manhattan scored six of the final eight points over the final 99 seconds of the third frame, owning a 38-32 lead after 30 minutes.

Iona's deficit grew to double-digits after an Emily LaPointe trifecta at the 8:39 mark of the final quarter. Lucia Becerra Perez went down the other end on the ensuing possession and finished with contact inside, converting on a three-point play to get the points back.

LaPointe was responsible for the next seven Jasper points, helping her squad extend their lead to double-figures halfway through the period. Iona never got back within single-digits, eventually falling by a final tally of 59-47.

STATISTICAL LEADERS

  • Rachu led all scorers, pouring in 18 points on six three-pointers. The six trifectas matched a career-best for the senior, the fifth time she's reached that mark in her career and the fourth time this season.
  • Pamela Miceus pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, missing out on a double-double by two points. Lesko had a team-high seven boards.
  • Camilion dished out a game-best four assists. Five Jaspers tied for a team-high with two assists each.
  • Miceus swatted a game-leading four shots. Julie Hoier's three steals were the high-mark of the evening.
